Dr. Ludovica Tomarchio is an academic researcher, her work explores the relationships between socio-spatial practices, mediated environments, and design. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Berlin University of the Arts in Germany, working on the project Site Complexes: Models of Responsive Practices for the 21st Century. She earned her PhD from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), affiliated with the ETH Centre, where she conducted research at the intersection of art, social media, and urban spaces and her Master of Architecture in Politecnico di Milano. Before joining the NOMIS project, she served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at TU Berlin associated with the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center 1265 “Re-Figuration of Spaces,”, studying the social production of Hybrid Spaces in young adults in Berlin and Lima. Her research methods are multidisciplinary and employ a mixed-methods approach, integrating big data analysis and visualization and qualitative methods. Beyond her academic achievements, Ludovica, worked at Aedes Berlin and is deeply committed to public outreach and interdisciplinary dialogue.

2.22.3Site Complexes: Responsive Practices for the 21st Century is a research project that reconceptualises sites not as fixed locations, but as dynamic constellations of material, social, and digital relations. Bringing together art, architecture, and spatial theory, the project investigates how sites are continuously produced through overlapping temporalities, infrastructures, and modes of representation.
Within this framework, responsive practices are approaches that do not simply intervene in a site, but actively engage with its layered conditions, tensions, and publics. Rather than resolving complexity, these practices work through it, making sites legible, negotiable, and open to transformation.
ludovica research focuses on a set of typologies of responsiveness, including:
- Re-orientation, as explored in Gibellina, where artistic and architectural practices redirect the public sphere from narratives of catastrophe toward future imaginaries;
- Mediatization, exemplified by practices such as Forensic Architecture, or digital twins, where sites are reconstructed and contested through digital evidence, platforms, and visualisation;
- Attunement, which foregrounds situated, often fragile forms of engagement with environmental, social, and more-than-human conditions.
